Overview

Amboseli National Park sits in the rain shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and offers what many consider the most cinematic safari setting in all of Africa — vast open pans, lush spring-fed swamps, and free-roaming elephant herds framed by the snow-capped 5,895-metre summit of Africa's tallest mountain just across the Tanzanian border. This overnight escape is purpose-built for travellers short on time who want maximum visual impact: huge tuskers, big skies, and that Kilimanjaro silhouette at sunrise.

Amboseli is home to more than 1,500 elephants, many of them part of large matriarchal family groups that have been studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. Your guide will know several of them by name. The park is also remarkable for its high density of birdlife — more than 400 species — and the way its melting glaciers feed underground rivers that surface as crystal-clear swamps in the middle of an otherwise arid landscape.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

• Day 1: Depart Nairobi at 06:30, arriving in Amboseli mid-morning. Game drive en route to your camp for lunch, followed by an extended afternoon game drive timed for the golden hour. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
• Day 2: Sunrise game drive with the best chance of catching Kilimanjaro free of cloud. Return to camp for breakfast and check-out, then a final game drive on the way out of the park before the return journey to Nairobi (arriving evening).

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June–October and January–February) is the best time to visit Amboseli — wildlife concentrates around the swamps, vegetation is thin for excellent visibility, and the skies are most likely to be clear for Kilimanjaro views. Mornings before 09:00 and late afternoons give the clearest mountain photography.
