Nestled at the floor of the Great Rift Valley about 160 km north-west of Nairobi, Lake Nakuru National Park is a 188-square-kilometre haven that punches well above its weight. The alkaline soda lake at its centre has long been famous for the pink wash of flamingos along its shoreline, and the surrounding wooded escarpments, yellow-acacia forests and grassy plains support an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including both black and white rhinos, the endangered Rothschild's giraffe, and lions that famously climb the park's flat-topped acacia trees.

What You Can Expect to See

Lake Nakuru protects three endangered species in particular: Rothschild's giraffe (reintroduced in the 1980s and now thriving and easily photographed), the Eastern black rhino, and the southern white rhino. The lake itself hosts huge numbers of cormorants, pelicans, African fish eagles, marabou storks and — depending on water salinity — lesser and greater flamingos. On land, look for buffalo, eland, defassa waterbuck, zebra, warthog, impala, hippo, and the famous tree-climbing lions.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Nakuru is rewarding year-round. The dry months of June–October and January–February are best for general game viewing — wildlife concentrates near water and roads stay passable. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with water level and algae bloom; the highest counts tend to occur during the dry months when alkalinity peaks.
