Overview

Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya's best-kept secrets — a 165-square-kilometre wilderness in the country's arid north, sliced through by the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River and surrounded by the rugged volcanic landscape of the Laikipia plateau. Far from the well-trodden circuits of the south, Samburu rewards the adventurous traveller with a completely different cast of wildlife, far thinner crowds, and a strong cultural overlay from the Samburu people — close relatives of the Maasai who maintain a traditional pastoralist way of life on the surrounding rangelands.

This three-day, two-night safari gives you the best of the reserve: multiple game drives along the river's gallery forest where elephants and lions come to drink, a chance to track the Samburu Special Five (species found almost exclusively in northern Kenya), and time to absorb a landscape of doum palms, red earth, and granite kopjes that feels entirely apart from southern Kenya.

The Samburu Special Five

These five species are uniquely adapted to the arid north and are very rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya:

• Grevy's zebra — taller and more elegant than the common plains zebra, with narrow stripes and big rounded ears; fewer than 3,000 remain globally
• Reticulated giraffe — the most striking giraffe subspecies, with sharply defined net-like coat markings
• Beisa oryx — pale-coated antelope with long, straight, rapier-like horns, perfectly suited to the dry plains
• Gerenuk — the "giraffe-necked" antelope, famous for standing on its hind legs to browse high vegetation
• Somali ostrich — distinguished from the common ostrich by bright blue (not pink) neck and legs in males

Day-by-Day Itinerary

• Day 1: Early morning departure from Nairobi north past the equator. Lunch at camp on arrival, then a late afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
• Day 2: Full day in the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives. Optional visit to a Samburu manyatta (village) for a guided cultural encounter (small extra fee).
• Day 3: Sunrise game drive followed by breakfast and check-out. Return journey to Nairobi, arriving by evening.

Best Time to Visit

June–October and December–March are the prime months — dry weather, sparse vegetation, and excellent wildlife concentrations along the river. Samburu can be very hot, so morning and late-afternoon game drives are the most productive.
